Carmel, Calif., is a welcome vacation haven for dogs and their people companions. Many local hotels, restaurants and shops are canine-friendly—and Carmel City Beach is one of the best leash-free and clean beaches I’ve seen in my 7 years. In fact, I’m such a fan of Carmel that I blogged about my last trip there with my family.

And now it’s even easier for families to bring their pooch (or cat) pals along with them to Carmel. In the months of May and June, three hotels (Cypress Inn, Lamp Lighter Inn and Vagabond’s House Inn) are offering a First Pet Stays Free deal. When making reservations, be sure to mention the deal and your buddy (or the first buddy, if bringing more than one) gets to skip out on the daily pet fee ($30).

Save that pet hotel money for extra kibble. Or cookies. Or dog toys. We always appreciate that.

The Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau in Monterey, Calif., has found a way to turn your frown upside down with its “Smile Recovery” promotion: a ton of deals at local hotels, resorts, B&Bs, attractions and restaurants.

Choose from 40 percent off at luxe Ventana Inn & Spa in Big Sur or a third night free and $100 food credit at the swanky Bernardus Lodge in the Carmel Valley. Stay at the Carriage House Inn any Sunday through Thursday, and get 30 percent off.

For family fun, the Monterey Bay Lodge offers a Family Bonfire Package for four, including breakfast, dinner, a bonfire on the beach, whale watching and tickets to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (two nights; $967, tax included).

Tour Monterey Bay by kayak, with a 25 percent discount on kayak tours from Adventures by the Sea, or get a bird’s-eye view with a $50 discount on helicopter tours from Specialized Helicopters.

Dining and winery deals include 20 percent off the dinner menu (plus a free glass of sangria) at Estéban, the restaurant at Casa Munras Hotel, 15 percent off your check at PortaBella and Merlot Bistro (I’m a big fan of PortaBella), and free wine tasting (plus a discount on purchases) at Bargetto Winery’s Cannery Row tasting room.

Expiration dates vary per deal, so find your favorite at www.seemonterey.com/deals and start smiling!

Even though those of us at TravelMuse would love to be able to cover every place and event that we find interesting, there’s clearly no way we can, with all of two full-time editorial staffers and a handful of contractors and interns. So I’m starting a new weekly post called Friday Favorites: Travel Articles From the Web, in which we link to the items that caught our eye the previous week, or month, as the case is for this post. I hope you enjoy our first bit of armchair travel recommendations!

36 Hours in Carmel-by-the-Sea

The New York Times, Jan. 25, 2009

Carmel is one of those relaxing California-coast destinations that never fails to please, whether visiting on a day trip or for a long weekend. The New York Times article captures much of what makes this seaside town great, including its wine culture, excellent dining scene and stunning coastline. What I’d add to the list is KMRL 1410 AM Jazz & Blues Radio, the great local jazz station in town that also has a retail store, where you can snag hard-to-find recordings, posters of past Monterey Jazz Festivals and more.

50 Ways to See Alaska

National Geographic Traveler, Jan./Feb. 2009

OK, so you got all caribou-ed out during the election, but don’t punish Alaska for bringing us Tina Fey’s evil twin sister. The place is beyond beautiful, and pretty darn extensive too. Plus she’s celebrating her 50th birthday this year, so be nice. There‘s a lot on offer, from wildlife watching and glacier hiking to camping and dog-sledding. The article covers the usual suspects, as well as some, er, unique events and festivals that I’m adding to my trip list: the Talkeetna Moose Dropping Festival and the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics. Hey—both are held in July, so I can make it a two-for-one vacation!

See Seriously Weird Madagascar While You Can

San Francisco Chronicle, Jan. 4, 2009

I’ve been wanting to get to Madagascar for some time, and not just because it’s one of the world’s top producers of vanilla beans, which I hoard (sort of). Naturally there’s the rare flora and fauna, beautiful landscapes and a distinct culture that seems to still be relatively unspoiled by excessive tourism. And it’s a former French colony. For some reason, most of my favorite spots in the world are related to the French somehow: French Polynesia, Vietnam, Laos, St. Barth’s, Monaco … Plus, the author’s tale of getting peed on by a lemur made me laugh, and reminded me of my monkey shower during a trek through the jungle in Nicaragua several years ago.

Travels With Marley: Carmel

Posted by Marley Sep 22, 2008

With my hectic schedule of eating, playing, sleeping and writing—I recently needed to get outta Dodge for some nice downtime. Luckily, my people decided to take me to Carmel, Calif., for a weekend treat.

Talk about treats! Hotels, restaurants, store owners and even people on the street offer Scooby snacks to deserving pooches. Business establishments have water bowls just outside their doors for thirsty canines like me. And one of the sweetest leash-free (and clean!) beaches is just walking distance from dog-friendly hotels. Carmel is a dog’s dream. Well, besides mountains of kibble.

Here are a few of my favorites from my Carmel weekend:

Cypress Inn. With this elegant hotel’s comfortable rooms, courtyard, library bar and living room all open to pets, I had plenty of places to chill out. The front desk even has a large bowl of biscuits for your buddy.

PortaBella. I was treated like a king at this Mediterranean restaurant, and was given a sparkling silver water dish placed on a white napkin and dinner plate to quench my thirst. Now, that’s service!

Diggidy Dog. I couldn’t decide between all the edibles at this dog and cat boutique, so my people got me some luscious peanut butter biscuits. Besides all the food, there are more pet accessories and toys than you can imagine.

Carmel City Beach. The white sand crunching beneath my toes, the body-surfable waves, the friendly people and their dogs—what more could I want in a beach? The city takes great care of this pretty, leash-free beach, leaving it one of the cleanest I’ve ever seen (remember to bring a bag to clean up after your pal). If your pup isn’t friendly, please keep it on leash. The people and other dogs will thank you.
