Spas, golf courses and zero-entry swimming pools are staples at today’s resorts. The fact is, that you typically don’t have to venture far from the resort lobby for a Swedish massage or seaweed wrap.  A select number of U.S. resorts, however, offer one-of-a-kind amenities that transcend the predictable. Here are some resorts I’ve visited that feature some of America’s most intriguing and interesting amenities:

Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain, Georgia has one of the largest glass-enclosed tropical butterfly conservatories in North America. Designed to recreate a rain forest environment, the complex houses 1,000 tropical butterflies representing 50 species as well as tropical plants and birds.

Thrill seekers should consider Grande Lakes Orlando in Orlando, Florida, which recently opened an adventure course, a multi-level structure consisting of poles, cables and platforms with 25 traversing and climbing elements. Additional elements include two 600-foot zip lines and a 40-foot giant swing.

The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia is arguably the king of recreation amenities with a line-up that includes an 8-lane bowling alley, off-road driving school, falconry program, trap and skeet shooting complex, horseback riding and whitewater rafting.

Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina, site of the 2003 U.S. Lawnbowls Championship, is not just about golf. Besides its eight golf courses, it has two impeccably manicured croquet courts and one lawnbowling court located in front of its magnificent, legendary golf clubhouse.

The Lodge at Koele in Lanai City, Hawaii has a multi-sport facility with a 14-station sporting clays course, skeet field, 6-station air rifle range and 12-station archery range. Beginners are introduced to the various sports with a 45-minute lesson by a certified instructor.

For wine connoisseurs, Chateau Elan in Braselton, Georgia has a winery a few hundred yards from its front lobby. The 75-acre vineyard and winery grows French and French-American hybrid grapes and produces thousands of bottles of award-winning wine every year. The winery hosts daily wine tours and tastings as well as weekly cooking classes. You can even have a custom wine label made to celebrate a personal special event.

Serious stargazers should consider Sunriver Resort near Bend, Oregon, which has a phenomenal on-site observatory.

Discounted hotel rooms at a tropical island resort?

You had me at “tropical island.”

That equals $109 per room, per night, based on double occupancy in a superior studio, and $116 per room, per night, based on double occupancy in a deluxe one-bedroom suite. So just what do you get for those low, low prices?

How about a lush, tropical setting, a gourment restaurant and a fresh-water swimming pool? Not enough to tempt you? How does an aviary featuring 21 species of tropical birds?

I’ll tell you what got me—the promise of serenity. Ah, serenity. How I miss you.

Inspired by President Barack Obama’s economic-recovery plans, nine Marriott Caribbean & Mexico Resorts are offering their very own[ travel stimulus package.|http://www.paradisebymarriott.com/stimulus/stimulus.html]

Visit ParadiseByMarriott.com between now and March 31 and download a free $100 Travel Stimulus voucher. The voucher can be combined with other packages and promotions, and is valid through Dec. 21, 2009.

The offer requires a three-night minimum stay; only one voucher per booking is allowed.

Whoo, boy, this makes me want to hop on a plane right this very second—and I’d have to travel through O’Hare International Airport, so you know I’m really jonesing for some sun. That $100 would buy a lot of very, very tasty tropical drinks. February is the longest short month of the year, is it not?

What are you waiting for? Go! Get! Book your trip, and have a daiquiri for me, OK?

Here’s a cool deal to snag this winter: Get a free night of lodging during the busiest holidays of the year—Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day and Easter Sunday—for the 2008/2009 season at any RockResort property, as well as participating Vail Resorts properties.

The Holidays on Us package features a free fifth night of lodging when you buy four consecutive nights, for a savings of 20 percent over the holidays.  The deal is good at a variety of properties, including Snake River Lodge & Spa in Jackson Hole and Hotel Jerome in Aspen. It’s even good at The Landings, RockResort’s beach resort in St. Lucia for those who prefer sand over snow.

Rates for RockResort lodgings start at $359 per person, per night; rates at other participating resorts start at $218. Packages must be booked before Oct. 15, 2008. Call 800-239-9290 or go to www.holidaysonus.com for more information.
