Located in southeastern Europe and bordered by Greece, Montenegro, Kosovo and Macedonia, Albania has a long history that has seen rule by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantine and Ottomans. Albania gained independence just before the First World War. A communist nation until the early 1990s, Albania also served as a haven for Kosovo refugees during the conflict in Yugoslavia in 1999.
Tourism is on the rise in Albania. The capital, Tirana, is a youthful, artistic city that is constantly reinventing itself with a lively café culture. The unspoiled Ionian coastline and beaches provide a draw, as do notable archaeological sites like the ruins of the ancient Greek and Roman city of Apollonia and the castle at Kruja.
