Angola is a coastal nation located on the western coast of southern Africa bordering Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia and Zambia. A Portuguese colony since the 16th century, Angola gained its independence in 1975, and a 27-year period of civil war followed. Portuguese is the official language of Angola, as a holdover from the nation’s colonial heritage.
Although Angola is little touristed, to date, travelers may enjoy the bustling capital, Luanda, and the country’s wide beaches and untouched wildlife parks.
