American Samoa is an unincorporated United States territory in the South Pacific Ocean consisting of a series of islands in the Samoan Islands chain. The neighboring nation of Samoa, formerly Western Samoa, is now independent. European explorers reached Samoa in the 18th century, and the Samoan archipelago was divided between the U.S. and Germany in 1899 to settle international colonial rivalries.
American Samoa was recently declared a U.S. National Park, and visitors can enjoy its untouched beaches, tropical rainforests and dramatic coral reefs and participate in home stay programs in local villages.
