A coastal Australian city, Brisbane lies in the southeast corner of Queensland state. It is Australia’s third largest city behind Melbourne and Sydney, and it’s situated on the banks of the Brisbane River, a key factor to the city’s development, which spills into Moreton Bay, 27 kilometers from the city center. Brisbane’s coastal floodplain—abundant in food and resources—was an ideal home for its original inhabitants: the Jagera and Turrbal Aboriginal clans. Europeans established settlements in the early 1800s.

Brisbane is becoming a major tourist destination, due to both its natural beauty and its variety of arts and entertainment offerings. South Bank is Brisbane’s cultural centre including top-rated restaurants, live music venues, universities, and art galleries and museums. South Bank also offers the outdoor enthusiast beautiful parklands, a riverside promenade, the bougainvillea-canopied Arbour walkway and Streets Beach—a beach in the middle of the city.
