On the Black Sea, between Romania and Turkey in southeastern Europe, modern Bulgaria was once a part of ancient Thrace, a culture exhibited today by an abundance of archeological sites throughout the country. First established in the 7th century, art and literature thrived during the First Bulgarian Kingdom, known as the “Golden Age” under Tsar Simeon I in the late 9th and early 10th centuries. The Cyrillic alphabet is believed to have been developed in Bulgaria during this time. Later, the country would come under the control of the Ottoman Empire and remain so for 500 years, gaining independence in the 19th century.
