Bermuda (officially, The Bermuda Islands or The Somers Isles) is a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic Ocean. Located off the east coast of the United States, it is situated about 1,100 miles northeast of Miami and 840 miles south of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The nearest landmass is Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, about 640 miles west-northwest.
Bermuda receives many visits from cruise ships during the summer months, with most ships operating from ports on the eastern seaboard of the United States. Bermuda is a favorite, if challenging, destination for off-shore yacht crews. Crossing from the U.S. mainland or the Azores can take up to three weeks in the calm summer months. The rest of the year, wind from nor'easters or hurricanes can make the crossing difficult. However, any trouble in getting to Bermuda is offset by its sub-tropical climate, pink beaches and cerulean blue oceans.
