Chile, officially the Republic of Chile (Spanish: República de Chile), is a country in South America occupying a long and narrow coastal strip wedged between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific forms the country’s entire western border, with Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east and the Drake Passage at the country’s southernmost tip. Chile claims 482,628 square miles of territory in Antarctica.
Chile stretches over 2,880 miles north to south, but only 265 miles east to west at its widest point. This encompasses a remarkable variety of landscapes. At 292,260 square miles, Chile is the world’s 38th-largest country. It is comparable in size to Zambia, and is about twice the size of Japan.
