Cape Verde is located off the west coat of Africa, nearest to Senegal. These volcanic islands vary in terrain, ranging from arid hillsides to verdant valleys.
Santiago, Cape Verde’s largest gateway island, is also home to the capital—Praia. The home of the old port, the old city includes the remains of the original fortress and cobblestoned walkways. Fogo, considered the original “mother” island (due to its volcano), has beautiful black sand beaches—a reminder of the volcanic history. A mountain range divides the spectacular lanscape of Santa Antão in two, and affords hiking and trekking options. Peaceful Maio is the place to get away from it all.
Residents are creole, from both Africa and Portugal (which colonized Cape Verde in 1462). Cabo Verde’s national music is the morna (mournful song), popularized worldwide by Cesária Évora. Check out a café or nightclub and get a sweet earful.
