In the eastern Mediterranean, east of Greece and south of Turkey, lies the island of Cyprus. Lemesos is the island’s main port. The city is situated between two archaeological sites at the top of oceanside cliffs—ancient kingdoms of Amathous and Kourion. The Pafos region is said to be where Aphrodite once lived. Pafos town, with its medieval fort, is also the site of the “Tombs of the Kings,” a UNESCO World Heritage site. And once merely a fishing village, the beach town of Agia Napa lures visitors from all over.

There’s plenty to discover outside the main towns, however. Wander through the small villages of the Akamas Peninsula or the beaches of the Karpas Peninsula. Investigate the medieval walls surrounding the town of Lefkosia. Follow the Pitsilla Wine Route, which winds through the mountain peaks of Madari, Papoutsa and Machairas. Or enjoy the sight of a blanket of wildflowers across the island in spring.
