Madrid is the capital of Spain, as well as the capital of the autonomous community of the same name (Comunidad de Madrid). It is Spain's largest city. Madrid is best known for its strong cultural and artistic heritage, a good example of which is the Prado museum. Madrid also boasts some of the liveliest nightlife in the world.
Nearly all of the most famous tourist areas are located in the historical center of Madrid. These include: Puerta del Sol in the middle of the area, Plaza Mayor a bit to the south, Palacio Real to the west and Plaza de Colón to the northeast. Some of these hot spots spread up past the Gran Vía, which is one of the main streets in Madrid.
Thousands of visitors a year flock to Madrid’s El Museo del Prado, which houses one of the finest art collections in the world, including landmark works by Velasquez, El Greco, Goya, Bosch and Rubens. Madrid is also home to several other major museums, including the Reina Sofía (with Pablo Picasso’s Guernica and others) and the Real Academica de Bellas Artes (with several Goya masterpieces).
The Palacio Real (Royal Palace) is an enormous complex with scorching plains of concrete around it and a two-story collection of medieval weapons and armor inside. The Royal Palace is one of the most emblematic and beautiful buildings in Madrid, not only because of its location, but also for its architecture and the artistic treasures inside its rooms.
