Known world-wide as the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews is also home to Scotland’s oldest university, the ruins of the St. Andrew’s cathedral and St. Andrews Castle, which was built in the 15th century. However, most tourists flock to this small town of 18,000 for a chance to play a round at the oldest golf course in the world, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, founded in 1754. High fees and a long wait list may dampen some visitors’ plans, but the course is still worth a walk through, which is luckily free.
