The town of Copán Ruinas is cradled in a valley in western Honduras—a mere seven miles from the Guatemalan border. Family-friendly exploration is easy and affordable here. Everything is within your grasp—from Mayan ruins to jungle hiking and horseback riding to soaking in hot springs.
Nearby are the Mayan ruins of Copán, first discovered in the 16th century by the Spanish, but they weren’t fully explored until the 19th century by John Lloyd Stephens, who wrote about them in his travelogue, Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan. It’s been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, and has the most hieroglyphic inscriptions and sculpted monuments of any Maya site in the Americas.
Visit the Macaw Mountain Bird Park and Nature Reserve, the Finca el Cisne (a coffee and cardamom plantation), or the Flor de Copán cigar factory (located in nearby Santa Rosa de Copán)—or sit back in a hammock and relax.
Family-friendly exploration is easy and affordable in Copán, Honduras, from gazing at Mayan ruins to getting up close with tropical birds.
