A city that never sleeps, Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is India’s bustling arts and entertainment capital. Famous for its glamorous film industry, Bollywood, Mumbai’s also known for its vibrant street life, eclectic bazaars, and an array of bars and nightclubs. India’s wild-child city is also the country’s financial center, claiming the headquarters of many national and international corporations. Visitors and residents alike go wild over cricket, and the Oval Maidan is overrun with matches on weekends.
Mumbai is located on the west coast Indian state of Maharashtra, at the mouth of a natural harbor, and was an ideal location for its historical, international shipping trade. Chowpatty Beach is a lively nighttime gathering place where people can go to the carnival and see snake dancers, acrobats and musicians. Another popular area of Mumbai is Colaba, full of open-air markets, tourist landmarks—the Gateway to India arches and the Taj Mahal Hotel—and two museums: the Prince Wales museum, which houses medieval art, and the National Gallery of Modern Art, which houses contemporary Indian art.
