The city of Āgra is located in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and once served as the capital of the Mughal rulers of India. The city started to decline when Emperor Shah Jahan decided to move the capital to Shahjahanabad in Delhi. Today Āgra is known as the home of the Taj Mahal, a mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Āgra Fort and the Fatehpur Sikri are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city was governed from the Āgra Fort, where the great Mughals lived. Built by Mughal Emperor Akbar and later abandoned, Fatehpur Sikri is a popular tourist destination because of its architectural majesty.
