Charlestown, the capital city of Nevis, is the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton and the site of the oldest synagogue in the Caribbean. The island celebrates its heritage in a multi-day annual festival called Culturama, held at the same time of year as Emancipation Day (the first Monday of August), the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the British Empire.
The Four Seasons Resort is the property that put Nevis on the map for many travelers. Additional resorts dot the island's beaches, and some former sugar plantations have been converted into charming accommodations.
