“Fortress built near the water” is the Arabic translation of Kuwait, a country on the coast of the Persian Gulf and located south of Saudi Arabia. Kuwait was originally settled by Arab tribes in the early 1800s and contains some of the world’s largest oil reserves. Much of Kuwait’s oil production and oil fields are housed at the Oil Display Centre.
The country’s bustling lifestyle and historical landmarks like the Kuwait Towers—which offer unique views of local cities like Farwaniya from a 360 degree rotating restaurant—are found in Kuwait City, the capital of Kuwait. Nearby islands like Failakai Island and Green Island—top destinations for weekend and vacation getaways—can be accessed from the capital via ferries or sambuks, traditional boats that are still built in Al Jahrah. Popular activities in Kuwait are sailing, scuba diving and power boating, which are offered through local resorts. Horseback-riding with the Hunting and Equestrian Club and golfing at the Sahara Golf and Country Club are among locals’ favorite pastimes.
