Riga, the capital of Latvia, is situated on the Baltic Sea coast on the mouth of the river Daugava. Riga is the largest city in the Baltic states. The Historic Center of Riga has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is particularly notable for its extensive Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture, which UNESCO considers to be unparalleled anywhere in the world.
Riga has several districts. The most popular for travelers is the Old Town, which offers the magnificent Doma Cathedral with its famous organ. Vecriga is an interesting area as well and boasts lively nightlife. The area consists mostly of 19th and 20th century buildings. During the Soviet era, many movies about "foreign life" were filmed in the neighborhood to save the expense and trouble of going to other European capitals.
