Madagascar is an island nation off the southeastern coast of Africa. Previously referred to as the Malagasy Republic, the nation is located in the Indian Ocean and is the fourth largest island in the world.

Tropical rain forests, exotic flowers, and 70 types of lemur species (a primate related to apes) are some of the natural attractions of Madagascar, which houses 5 percent of the world’s plant and animal species. Visitors can get a look into the lush vegetation including the array of orchid species along the east coast of the island—called the garden of Madagascar. The island is also home to a local tribe called the Betsimisaraka, the second largest group in Madagascar. Many of the island’s popular places such as Antananarivo (Madagascar’s capital) and the Perinet National Forest can be seen by hiking along the nearby Ankarata Mountains or riding a boat along Ampitabe Lake.
