Macedonia Vacation and Trip Information

The Republic of Macedonia is a country in southeastern Europe bordered by Serbia and Greece. Formerly the Kingdom of Macedon, the country was once ruled by Alexander the Great in 356 B.C.

There is plenty of Macedonia history to discover in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, which is home to medieval hotels, churches and Islamic buildings. One of the popular tourist attractions for socializing with the Macedonia locals is the Old Bazaar Market, which is mainly a shopping area but is also home to the country’s oldest hotels such as Kapan An and Suli An, both of which were built in the 15th century. Kurshimli An is the largest remaining medieval hotel with a roof covered in lead, called kurshum in Turkish—hence the name of the building.

Further must-see places are the Stone Bridge, Mother Therese Monument and Kale Fortress (which is located in the Skopje valley and offers a great view of the ancient buildings and modern architecture spread throughout the city). While Skopje is the major cultural and trading center in Macedonia, nearby cities like Ohrid has lakes for swimming and fishing that makes this destination ideal for the hot summer days. Other major vacation havens include Struga (which is known for its local shops that sell handmade crafts) and for the old churches from the 12th century such as the church of St. George nestled in the city’s woodland backdrop.
