Black sandy beaches and trees overflowing with bright red hibiscus flowers are among the natural wonders of Montserrat, which is part of the Lesser Antilles chain of islands in the Caribbean Sea. Plymouth, the major city in Montserrat, was once the capital before it was covered in ash from a 1997 pyroclastic flow, which was a result of the eruptions from the Soufrière Hills volcano. Montserrat offers visitors a chance to see the active volcano from a safe distance with guided tours of the Plymouth grounds, which is often compared to a modern day Pompeii.
Along the series of trails such Blackwood Allen Trail and Silver Hills Trail that run through lush mountain vegetation and around the volcano, tourists can see much of the surrounding environment which includes family cottages, local villages and banana plantations. Turtle watching, horseback riding and bird watching are among the popular nature adventures that allow visitors to become familiarized with Montserrat’s biological diversity.
