Formerly known as Nyasaland until 1964, the Republic of Malawi is a landlocked country in southeast Africa and is surrounded by Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. Its current name, Malawi, is derived from the term Maravi, one of the original Bantu tribes that inhabited the area.

Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, is divided into Old Town (which caters to the tourist population with shopping malls like Crossroads Complex and fine dining) and New Town, also referred to as “City Centre” or “Capital City.” Located between the two districts is the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary, which is home to over 200 bird species and 122 types of plants. The sanctuary provides tourists as well as locals the opportunity to learn about the growing eco tourism in Malawi.

Southern Malawi is the most populated region in the country and includes Blantyre, the economic capital of Malawi. Mangochi (previously known as Fort Johnston) and Cape Maclear are among the smaller villages spread throughout Malawi and are home to some of the country’s best fishing areas and hiking trails.
