Cozumel is an island off the Caribbean Coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, located between Cancun and the Riviera Maya. San Miguel de Cozumel is the island’s main city. What was once a quaint getaway has turned into a major cruise and diving destination, with more than 2 million visitors each year. Tourists also come for the island’s noted Carnival celebration and remnants of its Mayan culture.
An eco-friendly island, Cozumel’s center is home to lagoons, jungles and native wildlife. On the eastern shore is Chankanaab National Park, with more than 60 species of tropical fish, crustaceans and corals and a botanical garden.
Cozumel plays up its appeal for couples, but has just as many activities for families. Explore coral reefs, break a sweat playing water sports, take a trip in a submarine or play with the dolphins at Reefs National Marine Park.
