Lush vegetation and clear blue waters were some of the natural attractions that caught the eye of Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama in 1498 when he first landed in the area that is now the Republic of Mozambique, a country in southeastern Africa. Mozambique, which was named after the sultan, Muça Alebique, is home to beautiful island resorts like Bazaruto Archipelago and historic towns including Inhambane. Currently a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, Mozambique is surrounded by Zambia, Tanzania and Malawi.
There are several major holiday destinations in Mozambique such as Maputo, the capital of the country as well as Ponta Mamoli, known for its turtle nesting grounds, which offers tourists a unique glimpse of female leatherback turtles laying their eggs on the beaches during the months of November and March. Visitors can experience close-up encounters with over 200 elephants at the Maputo Elephant Reserve. Other popular activities include snorkeling with whale sharks in Tofu Bay, shopping in the local markets, bird watching and strolling along the streets of Ilha de Mocambique, the former capital of Mozambique.
