Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal, as well as its largest metropolitan city. It is situated in the Kathmandu Valley, which acted as a crossroads of Asia’s ancient civilizations. Kathmandu is full of historic locations, Buddhist and Hindu temples, shrines, palaces and unique villages. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Kathmandu became popular among westerners in the 1960s when hippies considered the city a major spot along the “hippie trail,” and traveled there to seek spiritual enlightenment. Their main destination, Freak Street, has since cleaned up and quieted down, but is still worth a visit.
Hinduism is the dominant religion in Kathmandu, and while other religions are represented in the city, Buddhism is the only other one of significant importance. Visit the Kopan Monastery or even take one of its 10-day mediation courses. You can also explore Durbar Square if you want to continue to explore the religious side of Kathmandu. The square is filled with temples, including the Teleju Temple, which is the oldest temple in Durbar Square.
Kathmandu’s economy relies on tourism, which is often called the third religion of Nepal. The Thamel District is known for being a bit touristy, but there are an abundance of great restaurants, bars and shops to explore—you can even ride in a rickshaw. Other destinations include Boudhanath, the most sacred site of Buddhist pilgrimage in Nepal, and the New Road, the financial hub that is one of the most popular marketplaces in Kathmandu.
