Saint Pierre and Miquelon Vacation and Trip Information

Settled in the early 17th century, Saint Pierre and Miquelon is the last self-governing territory of France’s former North American colonial empire. The eight small islands are home to just over 7,000 people in the North Atlantic Ocean, south of Newfoundland. Cold and wet with constant mist and fog throughout the year, fishing is the way of life for most residents.

As would be expected, the language, food and culture of the islands are heavily influenced by the French. The best location to delve into the islands is the capital of Saint-Pierre, the only significantly populated town with hotels, restaurants and museums. Though, for food lovers, the small town of Miquelon has an annual Seafood Festival in August, organized by the local soccer association, with more than 400 people gathering to enjoy a variety of dishes prepared by local volunteers. Finished off by French-style desserts, of course.
