Situated along the coast of North Africa is Tunisia, a country known for its ancient mosaics that are reflective of the Roman culture dating back to the 3rd and 4th century. Tunisia was first inhabited by Phoenicians who founded Carthage. Although the 2nd century B.C. marked Rome’s conquest of Carthage, Tunisia later become an independent state in 1956. Roman ruins from Tunisia’s rich past are found at the site of old Carthage, where tourists can admire the Roman amphitheatre, Antonine Baths or walk along Byrsa Hill to the Carthage Museum and St. Louis Cathedral which was built in 1890.
To view more historical artifacts like sculptures, visit the Bardo National Museum where the walls of this former palace located in the country’s capital, Tunis, feature images of Greek gods and goddesses. Tunisia is also the renowned site featured in the Tatooine sequences of the popular Star Wars films.
Today, Tunisia is home to major spa resorts such as Hasdrubal Thalassa Spa Djerba, where guests can experience the Roman practice of thalassotherapy—bathing in warm sea baths. Tourists are also drawn to the warm sandy beaches and water sports including sailing, diving and windsurfing (a popular water activity for the locals) offered at many of the waterfront hotels in areas such as Sousse, Monastir and Hammamet. Tunisia also caters to golf aficionados, offering six golf courses including Carthage Golf Course, Tabarka Golf Course and El Kantaoui Golf Course.
For entertainment fun during the warm summer weather, visitors and locals can participate in Tunisia’s many festivals such as the International Festival of Jazz, the International Festival of Symphonic Music and the International Festival of Carthage.
