Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Sonora is a quiet, mountain town with a population of under 5,000. It was founded by Mexican miners during the California Gold Rush and named after the northern Mexican state of Sonora. Many buildings still stand from the days when Sonora was little more than a mining town. Today, Sonora has become the cultural capital of the region, boasting museums, festivals, art galleries and live theater.
Because it is located only 70 miles from Yosemite National Park, the area surrounding Sonora is an outdoorsman’s paradise. There are many campgrounds, lakes, trails, resorts and golf courses to be discovered in California’s “Gold Country.” Also, Sonora is an easy drive away from the San Francisco Bay Area and California’s Central Valley.
Similar to Renaissance fairs, Celtic festivals are an entertaining way for the family to spend the weekend and learn about other cultures.
