Crested Butte, Colo., is located southwest from Denver. Crested Butte was primarily a mining village in the 1950s that suffered economic downturns but regained status in the 1960s after the town became a world-class ski resort.
Crested Butte is a popular tourist destination for skiing and snowboarding at the Crested Butte Mountain Resort and mountain biking as well as kayaking in the summer. Locals who enjoy wildflower viewing in the early spring attend Crested Butte’s annual Wildflower Festival. Wildflower aficionados can participate in a series of weeklong events including painting and drawing workshops, performances and tours on horseback, by boat or in an old-fashioned wagon. You can hike past the town’s historic buildings and along mountain trails leading to open grassy areas with thousands of different types of wildflowers.
The town, which is a preserved National Historic District, has several downtown shops, galleries and restaurants that cater to the locals and frequent visitors. The area near Crested Butte includes the Gunnison National Forest, 14,000 feet mountain peaks and water reserves such as the Blue Mesa Reservoir—the largest body of water in the state of Colorado.
