Miami Beach’s flamboyant and unabashedly extravagant entertainment district, South Beach, is a world all its own. A favorite stomping ground for celebrities and fashionistas, South Beach became a popular location for films and photo shoots; shows like Miami Vice popularized the area.
As the 1980s ushered in the fashion industry, South Beach residents made a move to preserve the area’s historic neighborhoods and unique Art Deco architecture, like the famous and oft-photographed Colony Hotel on vibrant Ocean Avenue. South Beach today offers an array of nightlife, art and cultural activities. The Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts hosts world-class ballets and Broadway shows. During the day, South Beach resembles a laid-back beach town full of happy beachside rollerbladers, or sunbathers catching some rays on the clothing-optional beach.
