Best hotels, facts and information in Captiva Island
Like its neighbor Sanibel Island, travelers make the trek to Captiva Island in order to experience a serene beach setting. The island was once a part of Sanibel Island but, likely due to the storm surge of a hurricane, a channel washed through creating what is now known as Blind Pass. Local folklore says that Captiva got its name because infamous pirate José Gaspar (Gasparilla) kept his female prisoners on the island.
The beaches of Captiva are lined with shells like sand dollars, coquinas and scallops, making it a seashell collector’s dream. The South Seas Island Resort, which completed a $140 million restoration/renovation in 2007, takes up the northern two miles of Captiva Island.
