Miami, known as "The Magic City," is the southernmost city in Florida. Its nickname is due to its rapid growth over the past century, from 1,000 in 1896 to over 5.5 million residents in 2006. Winter visitors remarked that the city grew so much from one year to the next that it was "like magic."

However, the city probably owes its growth more to its advantageous location and international appeal than it does to magic. Miami's proximity to the Caribbean has also earned it the nickname "The Gateway to the Americas," and is indeed the point of entry for most incoming islanders. Miami has one of the largest, most influential ports in the country.

Besides the ethnic appeal (over 65 percent of the city is Latino), Miami's major tourist draw lies in its beautiful beaches and consistently warm weather. The nightlife and club scene in Miami is one of the most vibrant in the country, although many of the clubs are upscale venues with a cover charge, long lines and required dress code.

Other worthy destinations include Bayfront Park, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the Holocaust Memorial and the Oleta River State Recreation Park.
