The Vineyard has some 60 restaurants, from elegant to family, light lunches to take out, with many different cuisines well-represented.

Edgartown

Charlotte Inn's L'Etoile is one of the best restaurants on the island. Its art gallery décor is a fine setting for its French cuisine. The wines are superior and everything is beautifully served with linens and candles. The Coach House in the Harbor View Hotel specializes in native swordfish, lobster, sole and quahog chowder, though meat and fowl are on the menu. A plus is the sweeping view of the busy harbor.

On the harbor, the Navigator Restaurant has a maritime décor. The downstairs bar's beams are hung with ships lanterns, fish nets, and lobster buoys. The Navigator room upstairs is more formal. Seafood Shanty is another waterside restaurant. An island landmark offering savory seafood specialties, it has an upstairs pub with light fare and entertainment. There is also a menu for children.

Oak Bluffs

Lola's, next to the Island Inn, has a good-sized dining room with a pub. Along with light fare, it has slightly rambunctious entertainment. It is popular for its char-grilled Southern food and brunch buffets. Balance offers a contemporary take on standard American dishes. The atmosphere at Jimmy Seas Pan Pasta is laid-back and inviting, and the food can't be beat.

Vineyard Haven

The Black Dog Tavern, already one of the island's most popular restaurants, was made even more famous by Bill Clinton when he ate here on a family vacation several years ago. On the harbor with a waterfront-tavern ambiance, it specializes in fish. Families love it. The Black Dog Bakery Cafe on the town outskirts, is a quieter and more relaxed offshoot of the tavern. The bakery serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday and dinner Wednesday through Saturday. Le Grenier is a fine dining venue. Unusual selections of French food please patrons at dinners and Sunday brunch.

West Tisbury

In West Tisbury you'll find Lambert's Cove Country Inn, featured in Gourmet magazine, is set among apple orchards. The fine dinner menu includes lamb, beef, fish and veal. Its Sunday Brunch has long been an island tradition.
