Located across from the Charles River from Boston is Cambridge, a city in Massachusetts that was first settled by a group of Puritans in 1630 who landed at Massachusetts Bay. Today, Cambridge, once known as Newtowne, is known for its two major universities Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Harvard Square is a popular spot for university students who hang out at the outdoor cafés, bookstores and local shops.
On a tour of Harvard, tourists can walk past monuments or opt to see MIT’s 20th-century architecture and classic Picasso sculptures. Harvard Museum of Natural History, Fogg Art Museum and the MIT Museum are among the many museums located on or nearby the university campuses.
Outside of the university areas, first-time visitors enjoy attractions like Mount Auburn Cemetery, Tory Row and the Longfellow National Historic Site, which once served as George Washington’s headquarters. Much of the city’s natural charm and historic influence are best viewed from the many bicycle trails that run through the city.
