Earlier discoveries of gold and silver nearby caused the population growth necessary for the Central Pacific Railroad to establish a railroad station in the area. Founded in 1868, Reno was named for a Union office killed in the Civil War, Major General Jesse Reno.
Best known for its casinos and the birthplace of Harrah’s Entertainment, its proximity to Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River make it a center for outdoor adventure. From skiers to kayakers to shoppers to gamblers, Reno has a wealth of activities for vacationers.
