Buffalo is more than a mere stopping-over point for tourists eager to view the grandeur of Niagara Falls. New York’s far western city, Buffalo, has a long legacy as a frontier boomtown in the 1800s with prosperous manufacturing industries in steel and shipping industries, and later, the automobile and aerospace industries. Buffalo was also a last stop on the Underground Railroad, where escaped slaves would cross the Niagara River to Canada and freedom.

Today Buffalo is a busy metropolitan area boasting a range of performing arts venues, like Shea’s Performing Arts Center, and museums and art galleries, such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, which houses an acclaimed contemporary art collection—the gallery is also the starting point of the annual Niagara Falls International Marathon.

Buffalo loves its festivals and street fairs; don’t miss the National Buffalo Wing Festival, or the Taste of Buffalo, one of the largest food festivals in the United States. Buffalo is also home to several spectator sport teams, such as minor league baseball Buffalo Bisons, the National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres and the National Football League’s Buffalo Bills. Add a range of outdoor recreational offerings, from kayaking to canoeing, mountain biking to cross-country skiing, Buffalo has a little something for everyone.
