Located at the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Bend is a city in Oregon. The city was once known as Farewell Bend during the mid-1800s when Bend’s first settler, John Young Todd, built a bridge across the Deschutes River and later started the Farewell Bend Ranch.
Bend offers a variety of year-round activities from skiing at the Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort to kayaking along the Deschutes River. Rock climbing and hiking aficionados can explore the mountains and surroundings of Smith Rock State Park, with stunning views of the river canyons. From the top of Pilot Butte, a dormant volcano, hikers can see more natural Bend scenery including the Three Sisters volcanic peaks. Or stop by the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, which seeks to preserve the volcanic features of the Newberry Volcano.
