Tucked away on Galveston Island in Texas is Galveston, a city known for its beaches that stretch for miles along the island banks. Galveston was once the home of European settler and pirate, Jean Lafitte, who established the colony of Campeche. In 1900, a large hurricane, the Great Storm, hit Galveston and destroyed one-third of the city—over 3,600 buildings.
Today, waterfront restaurants and recreational activities (including fishing, boating and surfing) make Galveston a popular destination for cruise vacations. Located a mile from Galveston’s cruise ship terminal is the Historic Downtown District which has over 100 shops, restaurants, galleries and restored historic homes. This area is also home to the Texas Seaport Museum, a National Historic Landmark where visitors can explore the 1877 tall ship Elissa. Other museums to explore include Lone Star Flight Museum and the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum.
