Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is a mere 75 miles from the nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C., but the park’s 500 miles of forest trail—including 100 miles of Appalachian Trail—offer a peaceful wilderness respite.

Visitors will enter the park along Skyline Drive, which traverses more than 100 miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers several vista points and access to trailheads. Car campers will enjoy several campgrounds within the park or backpackers can take to the trails and camp in the wild. Mountain streams offers ample fishing opportunities and horseback riders can enjoy more than 180 miles of horse trails.
