Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius. It is a port on the Indian Ocean, and the nation's largest city and main port. The population is 147,688. Port Louis was founded by the French around 1735 as a place for their ships travelling around the Cape of Good Hope to take on supplies, and was named in honor of King Louis XV. Among its historical sites is Aapravavasi Ghat, a World Heritage Site, that was the landing point for the indentured laborers, mainly from India, in the 19th century.
