Just returned from a trip to Amsterdam. It was a special occasion, so we wanted to have nice accommodations for the 3 days we stayed there. We chose Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. It is a bit pricey. When I shopped around, the prices were generally in the range; however, I found an advance purchase at Travelocity at /night. It turned out to be a great bargain for this hotel, and it was worth every penny. First, the hotel's location can't be beat - it's right on the Dam Square, in the center of everything. Second, the room was huge compared to other European hotels we stayed at. Some reviewers said the rooms were a bit shabby, but our room was pretty clean and nice. Third, the amenities are excellent. You get a generous package of the usual bathroom stuff, and a choice of 4 kinds of pillows. Plus, if you need anything else, the staff is very attentive. For example, I could not find my electric adapter to charge my phone. One call to the front desk, and in 5 minutes I had a proper adapter. The concierge is very attentive and helpful. Several very nice dining establishments on the premises, including a picturesque winter garden. They are not cheap, though. A couple drawbacks. The shower system is very weird, and the shower hose gets in the way. Plus the water temperature was fluctuating which was annoying. Also, the bathroom itself looked a little dated, with green tiles straight from the 70s. Also, we had a problem with our AC, and the room was too warm (until we decided to open the windows). It was the weekend night, so the maintenance staff has already gone home. But these did not detract from the overall experience. Definitely recommend!

In terms of location, it can't be beat.....right in the center of Dam Square. (although its in a tourist section (think a classy marriot marquee in Times Square in NYC) The hotel is magnificant. Classy, beautiful, ornate. My room was exceptionally appointed: razors, shave cream, exfoliating pads, shoe shine, toothbrush, hairbrush, etc...the list goes on...terry cloth robes & slippers, inroom coffe & tea sevice...complementary use of inroom safe. Oh, & they even have 5 different pillow choices!!! I was totally impressed! The staff is wonderful. They even gave me a personal wakeup call with a knock on the door, to ensure I would make my flight. The conciers was very helpful.

This hotel is located directly on DAM Square and is within a few short blocks to Magna Plaza, Kalvestraat Shopping Street, Red Light District, Madam Tussauds, Central Station, Canal Boats and a large compliment of pubs and restaurants. The lobby of the hotel is vintage 5 Star with a large uniformed staff, beautiful atrium eating area, lobby cafe and separate bar with a very nice almost exclusive atmosphere. The room was nice, good size and well apointed although we upgraded to an executive room. We will return again.

The location is absolutely wonderful. You walk out onto Dam Square and can walk wherever you want to go. The hardest part is driving there. We ended up following a taxi up on to the sidewalk and driving across trolley tracks. I still don't know another way to the hotel! Once you are there, you don't need your car again.
