Very bad vibes
I usually like funky old hotels like this, but found the room to be run-down, sad and smelly. The first thing that greeted us upon entering the...

Disaster in the Desert
I booked this hotel through AAA because the facility seemed acceptable - the "heated outdoor pool" being an amenity we thought particularly useful.

My wife and I traveled from Missouri to Arizona for the funeral of an uncle. The pictures and description of this hotel were completely innacurate. We had read the information and were traveling with pets. We were willing to pay for the pets. They charged us per day instead and could not provide any reason why except to say they would have to deep clean the carpet in the room even though our pets are completely housebroken and non-allegenic. The carpet in the room was completely worn out and never was deep cleaned in its life. There was deep dirt and "dust bunnies" under all the furniture and the bed. We also had to carry our luggage through the lobby and up and down steps due to construction. The only place to park was a gravel parking lot and we had to walk a long distance to the room. The room was not acceptable for any standards and we would not ever consider returning. They are handling their construction process without any reguard for their present guests. WHAT A DISSAPOINTMENT!!!!

It would have been a lovely hotel if they construction was done. Give the photographer major credit on the pics because it really doesn't look like that. If you stay at all during the week construction starts at 7am. When we got there, our toilet didn't flush. Also, the air conditioning in the room didn't work at all. So come 10pm at night, we had to switch rooms. They were great about it and gave us a fantastic upgrade but still a pain that late after a 13 hour car ride. The pool was disgusting and we avoided it. Restuarant was pretty but over priced with a VERY small selection. The vast majority of the hotel is under construction so you see that everywhere kind overshadowing the beauty of the place. I'd go again but wait until the construction was totally done.

I have stayed at the Lodge on the Desert at least 6 times and always feel as though I am "coming home". We like it because it is so unique -- so Tucson -- much better than a cookie-cutter hotel that could be located anywhere in the US. I will admit there are a couple of very dreary rooms in a bilious shade of green but the suites are beautiful; so private and I love staying there. The pool was a disappointment our last trip because it was closed for cleaning during our entire visit. The food in the dining room is excellent and the waitstaff and everyone else is very friendly. We were given a good discount because of the construction. Our only concern is that the addition will not ruin the old Tucson ambience but we are hoping to return in the Spring to find out. Great central location, too.

We were looking forward to our stay at the Lodge on the Desert - we'd done some research and this looked like an authentic Tucson adobe-style hotel at an affordable price. However, on arriving , the renovations being undertaken unfortunately marred our stay. There was a temporary car park with a dusty gravel surface and green fencing blocked what should have been a beautiful view of the mountains. On arrival, the desk staff were apologetic and said they had attempted to contact everyone due to stay at the hotel during the renovations (we received no heads-up and judging by the fact it's still not mentioned in the online hotel description, I don't think they've tried very hard!). We had the opportunity to view the room and stay one night to decide on whether we wanted to stay there. We chose to stay as we expected to only really be using the hotel as somewhere to lay our heads and relax after sightseeing etc. After having one mildly refreshing swim in the murky pool, a day later we thought our luck was in as it was being cleaned - however that was our first and last swim as it took 3 days to clean! Not good - and I had to feel sorry for the kids that were also staying at the hotel with their families.Apart from the downsides mentioned - the rooms and breakfasts were superb and this place looks like it will be great when finished - but that's of little consolation if you book now...

If you want to be frightened, stay here. I booked this hotel for a business stay as the Westward Look was full (great hotel, by the way). The parking lot is not only gravel, but it's the really messy and dusty and deep kind that you can't get your suitcase to roll though and makes a horrible mess on everything. The kid working the front desk was great and obviously has to deal with this daily. When I finally found my room (not an easy task) I actually did cry. One of the windows wouldn't close or lock. I was moved to another room that was equally scarry. Here's a tip; if you do make it through a night here do it in one of the queen rooms---very large and fairly decent. My boss sort of liked his. At 6:30 the next morning, glad to be leaving, the site was rocking at full tilt, complete with yelling and radio playing. How delightful at 250/night.

When we arrived at the Lodge on the Desert we were initially put off by the renovations the hotel was under. This is not a small project that they are working on, but a much needed addition. Luckily the construction is adjacent to the hotel and security privacy fences separate the whole mess. The saving grace was the staff that greeted us at the front desk. They informed us of the renovations and said we should stay at least one night (we were booked for a few nights) and if we didn?t have the best sleep they would personally do what they could to find us another hotel and insure that the rest of our trip was a good one.The bed in the room is amazing?. I hit the bed and slept a full and peaceful night?s sleep. Breakfast in the morning was wonderful and I was pleasantly surprised at how affordable the cost was. It was the bed and the service that made the difference at this hotel! Aside from the wonderful location? the hotel is centrally located in Tucson and within walking distance of shopping, dining and movies. We were even able to take in a spring training Baseball game within walking distance. At night things are peaceful and quite and the smell of orange blossoms outside our room was very stress releasing with the comfortable bed. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone?aside from our great experience. I think people should overlook the construction next door and focus on the great additions the hotel is making to improve their next visit.
