Best hotels, facts and information in Barbados

Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island in the Lesser Antilles. Once known for colonial sugar plantations, Barbados is now beloved by vacationers for its wide, white sand beaches and tropical climate. The island was formed by the collision of the Atlantic and Caribbean tectonic plates and volcanic activity, so it also has rugged sandstone cliffs on the North Coast.

Barbados offers an array of natural sightseeing opportunities: the crystallized limestone Harrison’s Cave; Welchman Hall Gully which house tropical plants and green monkeys; and two large baobab trees, the bigger of which has a girth of over 50 feet.

The capital city of Bridgetown, a modern and growing metropolis, has three schools of higher education, including one of the campuses of the University of the West Indies and the Samuel Jackson Prescod Polytechnic; Barbados has one of the highest literacy rates in the world: 99.7 percent.
