The Balkan nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a land of compromise, blending three ethnic groups (Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats), two regions (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and two decentralized governing bodies. The region has experienced Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and, most recently, Yugoslav rule, concluding in the controversial Bosnian War in the early 1990s.

Today, Bosnia and Herzegovina is busy rebuilding its war-torn structure and economy, and EU membership is a major goal. Tourism growth is also expected, centered on historical and dynamic Sarajevo and on winter sports and ecotourism in Bosnia.
