Intro

Greenland, a self-governing Danish province, is North America’s largest island and is almost entirely within the boundary of the Arctic Circle—85 percent of the country is covered in ice. With a population of only 57,000—most of which live in one of the country’s 18 towns—Greenland has a lot of room for the offbeat adventurer to explore a great, arctic frontier.

Fly into the international airport in Kangerlussuaq to begin your journey; it is the gateway to travel throughout the rest of the country. Nearby, the coastal town of Sisimut offers alpine skiing and dogsledding, hiking up Kællingehætten mountain or sailing around the area’s striking fjords. Visit the capital of Nuuk, home to Greenland University, Katuaq Cultural Centre and Greenland’s National Museum.

Other Greenland activities include kayaking (an Inuit invention), going on a whale or musk ox safari, fishing for Arctic char and gazing at the awesome Aurora Borealis. Be sure to visit the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and international focal point for scientific investigations on the effects of global warming.
