Fresh fish, pea pastries (pastizzi) and bigilla (a dip made from beans) are some of the local delicacies of the Republic of Malta, a small island nation in the Mediterranean Sea. Located to the south of Sicily, Italy, Malta is a nation comprised of a cluster of a total of seven islands including Gozo and Comino.
Enjoy an afternoon swimming with the dolphins in the clear blue sea or take a stroll along the narrow streets of Mdina, a medieval town in Malta and the nation’s old capital also known as “Silent City.” Much of Malta’s history is found in its current capital, Valetta, which is famous for its Mnajdra Megalithic Temples, ancient ruins of Hagar Qim and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hypogeum. Valetta, named after the French nobleman, Jean Parisot de la Valette, is considered a harbor city for its fishing communities.
Tour the popular Valetta destinations such as the Grand Master’s Palace on what is known as a karozzin, a traditional horse carriage, as you pass locals greeting you in Maltese, the local language of Malta. Or enjoy an evening performance at Manoel Theatre which was built in 1731 and is considered one of the oldest, active theaters in Europe.
