Intro

The Union of Myanmar, also known as Burma, is a country in Southeast Asia between Bangladesh and Thailand. With tropical trees, lakes and parks, Yangon (the capital of Myanmar) is appropriately nicknamed the “Garden City of the East.” The second largest city, Mandalay, is famous for the comedic trio, The Moustache Brothers.

Often referred to as “The Golden Land,” Myanmar is famous for its vast amounts of gold-covered monuments including temples, monasteries and pagodas. Some of the remaining Golden Pagodas in Myanmar are around 2,500 years old. The bright lights of the 100-meter Great Shwedagaon Pagoda—one of the most popular Buddhist shrines in Asia—is a must-see attraction for Yangon visitors, especially around sunset. To the east of the Shwedagaon Pagoda is Kandawgyi Lake which houses the Karaweik Palace, a floating restaurant in the shape of two mythical birds. Myanmar has diverse plant and animal life, therefore the government created strict regulations in order to protect the country’s rich biological resources which includes over 300 known mammal species and 7,000 species of plants.
