Intro

Originally formed in 1859 through the merging of Moldavia and Wallachia, Romania is a European country surrounded by Hungary and Serbia. Romania gained independence in 1878 and was later joined by Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia in 1918.

Although Romania has one of the lowest income levels in the European Union, it continues to draw tourists to its natural attractions such as the Danube Delta—the second largest delta in Europe—and historical landmarks including Bran Castle, better known as Dracula’s Castle. Romania is home to many medieval castles that are housed in the local Transylvania cities such as Sibiu and Braşov. For a look at more Romania architecture, stop by the outdoor Village Museum in Bucharest—the country’s capital—which contains over 300 historical buildings. The painted churches of northern Moldavia, the wooden churches of Maramures and the monastery of Horezu are among the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites spread throughout the country.

Romania is dedicated to preserving its natural ecosystems, specifically the forests which are home to a diverse assortment of species including birds, wolves and brown bears. During the winter, Valea Prahovei and Poiana Braşov are popular destinations for their ski resorts, while Saturn and Olimp draw tourists throughout the warm summer months.
