A coastal Australian city, Brisbane lies in the southeast corner of Queensland state. It is Australia’s third largest city behind Melbourne and Sydney, and it’s situated on the banks of the Brisbane River, a key factor to the city’s development, which spills into Moreton Bay, 27 kilometers from the city center. Brisbane’s coastal floodplain—abundant in food and resources—was an ideal home for its original inhabitants: the Jagera and Turrbal Aboriginal clans. Europeans established settlements in the early 1800s.
